One of the highlights of the event was a presentation on “The State of the Indian Online Market” by Anupama Salvi, the Chief Operating Officer of Avenues Pvt. Ltd. She although an architect by trade has extensive hands-on experience with IT and related business processes. One of her key strengths is her understanding of what the client and consumer want and need. It is with this expertise, Avenues has kept one step ahead in its strategy to provide cutting edge solutions for eMerchants worldwide. During the presentation, she spoke of her past experience with the Indian Online Market and what can be expected in the future.
‘In a country like India, where there are a billion people – there are bound to be buyers as long as value is perceived and offered. For example: IRCTC - Until the railway tickets were offered online, very few people would have envisaged the tremendous response. Now, people all over the country log on to book their rail ticket on the internet.
So, the real question is not about buying power and who buys what where and how but where are the sellers.
There are over 40 lakh establishments (sellers) but only a few thousands online merchants. So, the puzzle to be solved is not only why the brick and mortar merchants are not online but also what will entice them to this new frontier. The need of the hour is to evangelize the power of the internet, the benefits it offers to merchants and what the government needs to do to help this industry to grow. It is only when these goals are achieved on a cross country basis will more and more merchants reach out to this medium to further their businesses.
